Tours to Central Borneo

Just an easy 1½ hour flight from Surabaya or Jakarta to Palangka Raya, the provincial capital, gives a route to an authentic and different holiday in Borneo.

KTD can offer tours which includes Isen Mulang cultural festival (coming up 19-23 May 2006) which features traditional boat racing and other cultural competitions and demonstrations. See attached leaflet and photos from last year’s festival.

Orangutan We also offer an orangutan and bird watching tour to the Tanjung Puting area. We use small simple house boats there, each for a maximum of 4 adults, and best if friends or family. Guests stay on these boats for the entire period of the tour, going ashore at orangutan rehabilitation centres and for jungle walks to see birds. The boatman prepares meals freshly, all included in the price.

We can also offer weekend ‘get away’ stays and tours to the Kalimantan Meeting Centre (see our website at www.kalimantanmeetingcentre.com)

Also coming up, there are 2 white water rafting events on the Katingan River. One is associated with the Mungkekit Festival (new) in August and the other is national championships in October. I’ll send more details when they come to hand. These are being staged by an experienced rafting team with accreditation from Australia.

The Katingan River is close to the comfortable base camp at Kalimantan Meeting Centre, and Kalimantan Tourism Development can arrange travel up river and accommodation from there.

We can also arrange 4WD adventure tours. A family off-road rally in July is going from Palangka Raya to Tewah following Kahayan River to see Batu Suli rock formation and return via the longhouse at Tumbang Malahoi over 4/5 days. Accommodation will be sleeping with villagers and in the longhouse. The trip of a lifetime! Itineraries and prices on application.

KTD has just purchased a 20m traditional river boat and is refurbishing it to a 7 cabin, approx *** hotel standard, cruise boat. We will operate on the Katingan River later this year, cruising from Kasongan to Pagatan, on the Java Sea, along the boundary of the Sebangau National Park. We will stop at villages for cultural experiences, enter lakes by canoes to see birdlife and see traditional livelihoods practiced. We are also developing an orangutan ecotour over there, and guests will have the opportunity to join that, when it is ready. I will send more information and photos about this tour, once the boat preparations are further advanced.

I am very happy to adapt or design tours for your special needs. Looking forward to our collaboration, I send my regards,
